This subject provides an introduction to the mechanics of structures. Students will be introduced to and become familiar with all relevant physical properties and fundamental laws governing the motion of objects under various conditions of force, momentum and torque. Students will learn how to solve variety of problems of interest to civil, mechanical and aerospace engineers. While there will be a chance to put mathematical skills and physics learned in Calculus, Applied Physics and Statics to use in this subject. The emphasis is on the physical understanding of motion and laws that govern the motion.

RELEVANT PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- PLO-1 Engineering Knowledge: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problem.
- PLO-2 Engineering Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate, research literature and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate competency by being able to:
- CLO-01 Understand and use the fundamental concepts necessary for the study of kinematics of the particle motion in various coordinate systems
- CLO-02 Identify three basic methods to kinetics i.e. force-mass-acceleration, work-energy and impulse-momentum to interpret the effects of force, motion and momentum while carrying out the solution of complex engineering problems in two and three dimensions.
- CLO-03 Analyze the kinematics of rigid bodies where the equations of relative velocity and relative acceleration are encountered.
