Fundamental Chemistry is an introductory course that develops a clear understanding of the basic principles governing matter, atomic structure, chemical bonding, energy changes, equilibrium, solutions, electrochemistry, and reaction rates. Students learn core chemical concepts such as atoms, molecules, ions, isotopes, the mole concept, gas laws, intermolecular forces, electronic configuration, periodic behavior, acids and bases, pH, and introductory stoichiometry.
The course also introduces selected topics in organic chemistry, materials, transition metals, polymers, chromatography, sustainable energy, and water chemistry to demonstrate the practical importance of chemistry in science, engineering, industry, energy, and the environment. Emphasis is placed on conceptual understanding, simple quantitative problem-solving, and relating microscopic particle behavior to observable chemical and physical properties.
